One-Sided Gynecomastia Surgery: Cost & Symmetry

Cayra Knowledge / Gynecomastia

One-sided, or unilateral, gynecomastia surgery treats an enlarged breast on one side. The plan may involve liposuction, gland excision or both. Its cost is not automatically half that of bilateral surgery, and the first priority is confirming the cause of the asymmetry.

Why one-sided enlargement needs assessment

Gynecomastia can affect the two sides differently. However, a new unilateral lump or change should not be assumed to be benign gland enlargement from photographs alone. Tell the clinician when it appeared, whether it is growing and whether there is pain, discharge or a skin change.

The NHS gynecomastia guidance supports medical assessment of breast symptoms. Investigation, when indicated, comes before a cosmetic operation. A reassuring remote conversation cannot replace examination of a concerning lump.

How the technique is chosen

The surgeon assesses fat, gland, skin and nipple position on both sides. The smaller side provides a useful comparison, but it is not necessarily a perfectly symmetrical target: chest-wall shape, muscle and natural nipple position can differ too.

Main findingWhat the surgeon may discuss
Predominantly fatty enlargementLiposuction to address volume
Firm glandular prominenceDirect excision
Mixed fat and glandCombined treatment
Loose skin or a low nippleWhether skin or nipple-position work is needed

Our technique-selection guide explains why a pinch test alone cannot settle the plan. The ASPS procedure overview provides the general surgical distinction.

Will the other side need treatment?

Not necessarily. Ask the surgeon to show which differences come from excess tissue and which come from underlying anatomy. Treating an otherwise acceptable side adds an intervention and should have a clear reason, not be presented as automatically necessary for symmetry.

Agree what “balanced” means in your case. Discuss nipple height, areola appearance, chest contour and the likely scar. Perfect mirror-image symmetry is not a realistic guarantee, and temporary differences can be more obvious during healing.

Why the price is not simply halved

Facility preparation, anaesthesia staffing, assessment and recovery care still have costs when only one side is treated. The amount of operating time and complexity may also differ from what the external size suggests.

Cayra provides an individual quote for unilateral surgery; this article does not assign an unverified one-sided tariff. Ask whether tests, tissue analysis when recommended, a garment, medicines and follow-up are included. See the UK versus Turkey cost breakdown for the full comparison checklist.

Recovery and symmetry review

The untreated side will not go through the same surgical swelling, so early comparison can be misleading. Follow the instructions for activity, dressings and any compression garment. Do not use extra pressure on the operated side to force a faster match.

ASPS describes a settling period of several months for final results. Ask when formal photographs and contour assessment are planned. Persistent differences may warrant review, but the timing of any revision should be individualised.

Symptoms that need attention

Rapid enlargement, increasing pain, significant bleeding, fever or a new colour change requires prompt advice. New breast symptoms later on should be evaluated rather than automatically labelled recurrence. Our recurrence guide explains the possible distinctions.

Preparing your Cayra consultation

Describe whether the concern is new, longstanding or a change after earlier surgery. Bring medical records and a list of medicines and supplements. Cayra's gynecomastia page provides the treatment overview; contact the team for an individual assessment and written quote.

Frequently asked questions

Can gynecomastia occur on only one side?

Yes, but the cause of unilateral enlargement still needs assessment, especially when the change is new.

Is the price half the bilateral fee?

Not automatically. Many facility and care costs remain, and the surgical complexity must be assessed.

Can surgery guarantee identical sides?

No. The aim is improved balance while recognising natural anatomical differences and the limits of surgery.
